Today, SQL Server has grown into an extremely powerful database system that provides &
holds information for 1000s of systems worldwide. Without access to this
information, key systems will fail or become unavailable so its
important to realise errors as soon as you can, preferably before they
occur and cause problems to end users as well as your current &
potentially new customers.
If you're a DBA, system administrator or the IT technician in charge
of looking after SQL Server, you'll know the importance of monitoring -
being able to check the system is functioning in a timely manner and is
not overloaded. This often involves more than just the database itself
& the SQL that accesses it, it also involves disk space, memory,
logged event log records etc.
Monitoring even a single server can be difficult & time consuming
especially in 24 x 7 environments. For those with more than one server,
the problem soon gets out of hand. But not when you automate the
monitoring with the Sentry-go Quick SQL Server monitor.

The Sentry-go Quick SQL Server Monitor allows you to perform the
following essential monitoring tasks for SQL Server automatically ...
- Monitor SQL Server
services. Ensuring your SQL Server services are
running is one of the first things you should do. Should they fail,
the monitor can restart them automatically, thus minimising downtime
or notify you as required.
- Monitor database connectivity & query
results. The Quick SQL Server Monitor
can periodically verify connectivity to your key database systems.
Once connected, SQL queries can be run and results analysed, thus
ensuring key queries run efficiently and return the expected
results. You can also use this to determine the number of rows in a
table - for example, to view the number of pending orders currently
queued etc.
- Monitor SQL Server
Locking. The monitor can also check SQL
Server's locking system to ensure queries are running efficiently
and not waiting for prolonged periods of times for resources - such
as access to tables & indexes. If issues are found, details of
both the blocked & blocking connections are recorded for further
analysis. The monitor can also terminate connections automatically
to free resources and ensure blocking is kept to a minimum.

The Quick SQL Server Monitor also comes with a number of other features
which are often recommended when monitoring SQL Server machines ...
- Monitor
key services. In addition to SQL Server, you may also wish
to monitor other services running on the server - e.g. auto-start
services, COM+, MSDTC etc.
- Monitor SQL, Database & Server
Performance. The monitor comes
pre-configured with settings that help ensure that key performance parameters are within expected limits - e.g. no. open connections, active transactions, no. table lock escalations etc.
These can be further enhanced with other hardware & software counters,
depending on your server's configuration.
- Monitor errors written to the Windows Event
Log. System errors are
often written to the local Event Log. The Quick Monitor can check
& report on these based on event ID, message text etc.
- SQL Server Log
File. In addition to the Event Log, SQL Server also
has its own log file which is used to log lower level database failures and/or internal errors etc.
This and other text-based logs can easily be monitored, based on
keywords using the Quick Monitor.
- Available disk
space. To run efficiently, your Windows server as
well as SQL Server itself need plenty of free disk space. Using the
Sentry-go Quick Monitor you can automatically ensure free space is
available, automatically clearing down temporary files & warning
you to the issue if this free space becomes more limited.

The Quick SQL Server Monitor is part of the Sentry-go server
monitoring range of solutions. As such, other monitoring
"modules" can be plugged in and out as required, thus
expanding your monitoring capabilities as your servers needs &
demands change.
For example, the
status of the Windows firewall; if you also install an IIS Web server
alongside your SQL database you can monitor HTML or
FTP connectivity; if
you have a printer connected to it, you can monitor the printer &
associated print queues etc. You can even add your own monitoring &
have Sentry-go run & analyse the results!
Any Sentry-go Plus! monitoring component can be purchased and added to
the Quick SQL Server Monitor.
For environments with larger numbers of monitors, the Sentry-go Enterprise Option
allows status & alert information from each system to be
collated & accessed centrally - i.e. across the enterprise. For
enterprise-wide reporting, this is the option for you! |
